Non-custodial settlement
Why MeshGateway can never hold, redirect, or freeze funds.
Every payment is a stablecoin transfer authorization made out directly to the merchant's address. MeshGateway is named in no transfer and holds no balance: it cannot redirect, freeze, or delay funds, and a gateway compromise cannot move money.
The gateway's role is limited to:
- issuing signed, replay-proof 402 challenges,
- verifying the buyer's signed authorization against the challenge,
- submitting the settlement transaction on-chain,
- fulfilling the request once settlement is confirmed.
On Robinhood Chain the one-time Permit2 approval is gas-sponsored and settlement gas is paid by the MeshGateway relayer, so buyer wallets need only the stablecoin itself: see Robinhood Chain rail.
